House of Commons: Micro-Cultivation of Cannabis & Cultivation of Hemp
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 24, 2022
As announced on Monday, BCCFC was invited to present to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture regarding the future of craft cannabis in Canada. We were honoured to be invited and to be joined by BCCFC Member, Sweetgrass Cannabis. Their founder, Tom Deighton, provided a first-hand account of the various challenges associated with being a craft cannabis farmer under Ottawa’s current regulatory framework. During the presentation, BCCFC recapped the policy proposals that were reviewed and voted on at the BC Cannabis Summit. In particular, we focused on:
- Recognizing cannabis as a legitimate and legal farm activity across all federal agencies and legislation.
- Help farmers transition to the legal market by allowing them to access capital, grants, and small business loans available to other agriculture sectors.
- Review and reset the micro-class regulations in the Cannabis Act and make immediate changes related to the current capacity caps, the security clearance process, purchasing limits, and labelling.
We were very well received by the Committee and our proposals received the endorsement of the Cannabis Council of Canada. Watch for more advocacy updates over the summer.
